African-Caribbean Wellbeing Cafe takes place 3rd Wednesday of every Month

Volunteers at the African-Caribbean Wellbeing Cafe in Manningham help support older African-Caribbean people with mild to moderate mental health issues in the district by giving up their time each month to run the cafe.

Among their tasks are setting up the hall on the day of the cafe, running a raffle, bingo sessions and bringing prizes for the bingo, serving the elders their lunch and sitting with those that attend and talking to them as well as supporting them in any way they are able to.

“The qualities of the volunteers are very special as they are totally focused on the help and support needs of the elders. They want to give back to the community and the elders and supporting the cafe is one way of doing this.”

She added: “Everyone who comes to the luncheon club is given a warm, friendly welcome. Each volunteer gives and offers something special and unique to the cafe and to the support of the elders who attend.

“The elders look forward to attending the cafe each month as the interactions, support and encouragement given to them from the volunteers is invaluable both at the cafe and in some cases outside of the cafe in other community settings.”
